You have moved from Slovenia to live your dream and play floorball in Sweden. How did those thoughts come up?
From an early age, I always imagined playing floorball at a higher level. Last year, I attended a summer floorball camp in Prague. At the beginning of this year, I applied for a summer camp in Sweden, which sparked a conversation at home about trying to join a club in Sweden since its my last junior season. We prepared an introduction letter, and after several months and a dozen emails, we received a few responses from different Swedish floorball clubs. My goal was to find a club that would allow me to train and play as much as possible, and the most positive and promising response came from IBK Lund.
You have been in Lund more than a month now, how has it been, and have you been able to settle in?
Yes, I’ve been here since the beginning of August. I remember my first meeting with Christer; I received a warm and friendly welcome. The same happened during my first training session, where all the guys accepted me very well. Everyone I’ve met so far has impressed me with how friendly and talkative they are. Finding the right place to stay was quite a challenge, but we eventually found a peaceful spot in Åkarp. The landlord is very nice and friendly.
Studying remotely in Slovenia, how is that working?
I attend the Sports Gymnasium in Ljubljana. Our school has a well-structured system for remote students. We have an adjusted schedule, with online lectures for the main subjects, while for other subjects, we receive individual assignments. This being my first year, it was a bit stressful to coordinate everything, but now I’ve settled into a rhythm. I usually spend the first half of the day on school activities and dedicate the afternoons to floorball. So far, my time is well-organized.
You have been training with HA, H2 and HJAS. You have also been able to play a few games. How is the Swedish floorball compared to what you are used to?
The training sessions here are much more intense and faster, and all the players have better technical skills. I’m trying to keep up with every aspect. Joining several teams gives me more than enough motivation to train, so I hope I can deliver good performances soon. The level of floorball here is very high, and in the games, we’ve played so far, I’ve noticed that all the players are of a higher quality. The main difference from Slovenian floorball is that not all the players in Slovenia are equally skilled, which makes the game slower.
Hur går det med svenskan?
Helt okej. Jag heter Jaka och kom till Lund för att spela innebandy. I’m learning basic phrases, but the floorball language is a bit different. So far, I get along pretty well with my teammates in English, but I’ll have to step out of my comfort zone and confront with native speakers.
Do you have a secret talent that we are unaware of?
I wouldn’t say there’s anything special, but I just can’t get enough of floorball. I really love the game. Also, in the past few months, I’ve managed all my household chores by myself, which means I’m quick to adapt.
